PEDAL POWER & PEOPLE POWER - BIKING, BLADING, AND HIKING
IN THE AREA
- If you are
looking for scenic, well-tended trails for biking, hiking, or
roller-blading, the place to go is Fairmount Park. The Park has a wide
variety of trails, from easy, flat paved bike paths, to hilly, rocky,
even mountainous trails along the Wissahickon River (a tributary of
the Schuylkill). For more info, call 215-685-0000.
- Philly is a GREAT
biking city! Many people use bikes as the primary mode of
transportation, outfitted lights (for safety) and baskets (for
transporting books, groceries, etc.). Just be sure to ALWAYS ALWAYS
lock your bike up and to wear safety equipment.
- It's also
possible to take your bike on public transportation into the city on
the Market/Frankford "El" (elevated) Blue Line, or out to the suburbs
on the Regional Rail. Some restrictions apply. Call SEPTA
(215-580-7800) for details.
- BIKE SAFETY SENSE
- Protect your
bike! Bring your bike to your room for safe keeping, or secure it to
one of the three bike racks in front of Sansom Place East and West.
When locking your bike:
DO: Use a "U-lock", such as
Kryptonite, and secure the bike's frame AND tires to the bike rack.
DON'T: Lock your bike to railings, light poles or common
areas. Bikes secured in this manner may be removed and confiscated.
- Protect
yourself! Always wear a helmet, and use reflectors and a light at
night!
- Just say NO to
sidewalks! Riding a bicycle on a sidewalk is ILLEGAL in
Philadelphia! You may be ticketed for doing so if stopped by a police
officer. Pedestrians have recently been killed or seriously injured by
bikes on the sidewalks, so this law IS enforced! Please wear a
helmet and ride in the street!
